Choosing a Solitaire Game: Spider, TriPeaks or Word Cards?
Compare solitaire styles and practical mobile features: suits, card readability, undo, offline play, advertising and short-session controls.
Start with the card rules you enjoy, then compare the experience around them. “Solitaire” can mean building long suited runs, choosing a rank-by-rank path through peaks or sorting word cards into categories. These ask for different kinds of decisions.
Publisher disclosure: the examples below come from our game catalogue. Explore the different ways to play in our games and choose the style you enjoy.
Choose the rules before the theme
| Style | The main decision | Try this game |
|---|---|---|
| Spider | Build descending sequences, expose covered cards and organize complete suited runs. | Spider Solitaire: iOS describes tap/drag and unlimited games without lives; Android lists one, two and four suits, undo and statistics. |
| TriPeaks | Choose an exposed card one rank above or below the waste card, then compare what it reveals. | Solitaire Explorer: TriPeaks: the iOS listing describes journey-map progression and scenic destinations. |
| Word-category cards | Recognize which word cards belong together and clear category foundations within a move limit. | Solitaire Word Associations: category sorting, hints, undo and mansion progression are described on iOS. |
These are not Klondike draw-one/draw-three modes. If that specific deal is what you want, check the ruleset name before downloading. Word-category solitaire is also different from spelling words by swiping letters; our word-game comparison explains that distinction.
For short sessions, check the interruptions
In one player’s request for a calmer solitaire app, the important details were offline play, optional hints, resuming a hand and avoiding timer or streak pressure. Another community request focused on advertising and win/loss records. These are examples of player needs, not evidence that every player prefers the same design.
When trying an app, leave a hand unfinished and return later. Check whether the timer can be hidden, whether hints wait for your request, and how ads appear between or during games. A free initial download does not establish an ad-free experience. Offline gameplay does not prove that purchases, rewards or every mode work without a connection.
Make the cards comfortable to use
Readability can matter more than a decorative theme. Try distinguishing suits and ranks at your normal viewing distance, moving a short stack and reaching the stock or undo button with your usual hand. If you rely on larger targets, high contrast or a handedness setting, check those options on the actual platform.
Spider’s Android description explicitly lists appearance choices and left- or right-handed layouts. That does not establish identical iPhone settings. The iOS listing describes readable cards and tapping or dragging. Explore the game page for screenshots and downloads for your device.
Choose how you want to improve
For Spider, increasing the number of suits changes the planning problem. Compare runs with the same suit count and rules; differences in deal selection or undo use can change a win rate. A win percentage from another app is not a reliable target without matching those conditions.
For TriPeaks, review choices between a longer visible run and uncovering a blocked card. Check King–Ace wrapping and stock rules in your version. Our TriPeaks strategy guide helps you compare the choices in your next hand.
For word-category cards, inspect ambiguous words before spending moves. A move-limited puzzle may suit deliberate planning, while someone seeking an untimed letter puzzle could prefer Word Hunt, whose iOS listing describes no timers or lives. These are different games rather than interchangeable difficulty settings.
Find the offer for your device
Read the store’s advertising, in-app purchase and subscription disclosures. For example, Spider’s iOS description discusses an optional ad-free subscription in supported regions, while its Android listing labels ads and purchases. Do not assume the two platforms have the same offer or that a zero download price removes later costs.
Download directly from the App Store or Google Play using the buttons on each game page. Availability, renewal terms and regional prices can change; the store remains the place to confirm them before accepting an offer.
A practical way to pick
- Choose Spider, TriPeaks, word categories or another specific ruleset.
- Test readable cards and comfortable controls.
- Check pause/resume, offline access and optional assistance.
- Inspect the rules behind any statistics you want to compare.
- Read the current advertising and purchase terms for your device.
